Possibly adopted Catholicism to pursue military career in the foreign service. Received first commission in 1685, becoming a major in the new English regiment (14th foot). Knighted sometime between 1687-88. Sought to follow James to France with fellow Jacobites, but taken ill in London. &lt;br /&gt;
1689-91, had significant dealings with the highland clans.&lt;br /&gt;
1695-6 was in France with James who ordered him to secretly cross to London and help organise a rising. Lived in London in disguise, frequently changing lodgings. Plot failed, though Barcaly remained in London until 1697.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>
