Educated at Kirkoswald and Maybole before attending University of Edinburgh. Received MD from the University of Glasgow 1778. Blane studied under William Cullen who introduced him to William Hunter in London.
Blane then entered the navy as the personal physician to Lord Holdernesse and then to George Rodney, enjoying a long career as military physician where he sought reforms in naval healthcare and higher status for naval surgeons. Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians in 1781.
Patronage helped in civil life and Blane was appointed physician-extraordinary to the prince of Wales in 1785. Gained post as physician at St Thomas's Hospital, London (1783) but left post in 1795 to resume naval service.
Blane lived mostly at Culverlands, Berkshire but died at his house at 8 Sackville Street, Piccadilly, London
