Educated at Westminster (1743-6) and Christ Church, Oxford (1747). Called to the bar (1754).&lt;br /&gt;
Initially elected MP for Ayr Burghs but quickly brought in to fill seat of Glasgow Burghs when brother forced to step down (1761). Active in parliament as a Government speaker. Supported the Bute Administration then attached himself to the Bedford party. Political career ended legal career. Appointed lord clerk register (1768), voting consistently with the Administration. &lt;br /&gt;
Also MP for Argyllshire (1780-99). Died 1816.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>
