Entered Parliament as representative of Berwick-upon-Tweed (1734). Had to leave House of Commons when he succeeded earldom. One of sixteen  Representative Peers (1750). Made Lord Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland (1764).&lt;br /&gt;
