Initially entered the navy but resigned his commission in order to marry (c.1750). At some point, migrated to London to become an assistant auctioneer to Annesley in Covent Garden. Began his own sales in 1766 at rooms in Pall Mall. Late 1760s became known for selling works of art. Part owner of two newspapers, at different times, the Morning Chronicle and the Morning Post - which he used for publicity.&lt;br /&gt;
Twice married. Died at his residence in Pall Mall (1803).&lt;/div&gt;</summary>
