Studied at Edinburgh and Leiden.  Admitted Licentiate to the Royal College of Physicians of London (1694).  Served as physician to the fleet (1690s).  A voluminous writer, he published many works of medicine and philosophy.  Developed a secret cure of dysentery, which he provided to the Royal Navy and which made his fabulously rich and sought-after.  Appointed physician at the Greenwich hospital (1731).&lt;/div&gt;</summary>
