Called to the bar in 1710. Deputy to Robert Dundas, as solicitor-general for Scotland, thus linking him with the Squadrone. Appointed lord advocate (1742-6), at same time elected MP for Tain (Northern) Burghs. Appointed lord president of the court of session (1754-60).&lt;br /&gt;
