Educated at Edinburgh, Utrecht, Paris and Rheims.  Moved to London, and became associated with the Paul Chamberlen's midwifery practice (1700).  Began teaching anatomy (1706).  Elected Fellow of the Royal Society (1706).  Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London (1721).  Attended George II's daughter, Princess Anne, during a suspected pregnancy (1734). Published several books and scientific papers, dealing with medicine, botany and zoology, but particularly anatomy, but is known principally for his 'A Description of the Peritoneum' (1730).&lt;/div&gt;</summary>
