Called to the bar in 1738. Solicitor-general (Scotland, 1742-46), Lord Advocate (1754-60), Lord President of Court of Session (1760-87).&lt;br /&gt;
Raised as an anti-Walpole Whig by his father [[Dundas, Robert]]. Successful lawyer who initially spurned politics. Only entered political scene after his father's death, standing as MP for Edinburghshire. &lt;br /&gt;
Violently anti-Jacobite, had many critics - though supported Newcastle. &lt;br /&gt;
