Principle keeper of the signet (1705-7), Lord of Session (1707-34).
Strict Presbyterian. Did not take part in the Fifteen Rebellion, led by his brother Lord Mar. Allied himself with Lord Ilay placing the Erskine interest as his disposal. Became dissatisfied, however, with Ilay 1732.
Resigned judgeship and and returned for Clackmannanshire (1734-41). Appointed by the Prince of Wales as his secretary for Scotland. Involvement in negotiations with the Pretender for restoration of the Stuarts (1739).
MP for Stirling Burghs (1741-7). After the collapse of the Fourty-Five, Erskine went over to the Government, voting for the Hanoverians in 1746. Died 1754.
