Studied philosophy and mathematics and Marischal College. Was going to enter the ministry and received a license to preach though seems to have travelled before taking over the family business and estate at Eggie.&lt;br /&gt;
Travelled across England (1737-8). Conducted a short ministry at Newport (1739). Then became private chaplain to John Hopkins of Brettons, near Essex. Shortly after, travelled to France before returning to Edinburgh (1741). &lt;br /&gt;
Appointed professor of moral philosophy at Marischal College where he proved a successful lecturer. Published a number of works. Summer of 1750 embarked on a European tour. On the return home from the Netherlands, the ship foundered and he was drowned (1751).&lt;br /&gt;
