Fordyce was educated at Fouran and University of Aberdeen where he graduated MA in 1750. He spent four years as an assistant to his uncle John Fordyce, physician at Uppingham, Rutland, where he learned the basics of medical practice before entering University of Edinburgh - graduated MD 1758/
Migrated to London where he attended John Hunter's lectures on anatomy and studied medical botany at the Chelsea Physic Garden. Fordyce then spend time in Leiden but returned to London and settled in Essex Street, the Strand, giving lectures on chemistry - added lectures on materia medica and the practice of physic to his chemistry courses in 1764.
Fordyce became a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians in 1765 and was chosen as physician to St Thomas's Hospital (1770). He was then admitted to the Royal College of Physicians (speciali gratia). In 1793 Fordyce helped establish the Society for the Improvement of Medical and Chirurgical Knowledge. A prolific writer, Fordyce died at home and was buried at St Anne's Church, Soho.
