Educated at Marischal College and served a medical pupillage with a local practitioner. Admitted a member of the Royal Medical Society of Edinburgh (1744) though there is no indication that Fordyce qualified there. Served as an army surgeon during war with France.
Moved to London in 1750, establishing a general practice. Created MD at Cambridge (1770) and admitted licentiate of the College of Physicians (1786). Published a number of medical tracts in the 1780s. Lord rector of Marischal College.
Died at Brook Street, Grosvenor Square. Brother of [[Fordyce, David]], [[Fordyce, James (London)]] and [[Fordyce, Alexander]]
