Attended Inverness Grammar School and King's College, Aberdeen, graduating MA in 1664. Next years are unclear, but at some point travelled to, and settled in London. &lt;br /&gt;
Became tutor to Charles Beauclerk (1675) and Charles Berkeley (1678). Held a number of commissions under various kings (from Charles II to George I). Served as secretary and register of the Royal Chelsea Hospital for nearly 40 years. Acted as licenser at Stationer's Hall (1688-92). &lt;br /&gt;
Great letter-writer and book collector. Donated a number of books, and money to build a new library at King's College, Aberdeen. Also benefactor to the (newly founded) Society in Scotland for Propagating Christian Knowledge. &lt;br /&gt;
Died in London (1731) and buried in St Martin-in-the-Fields.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>
