First Marquess of Montrose. Studied at University of St Andrew before continuing military education in France.
Attended court in 1636 but was supposedly slighted at a meeting by Charles I. Returned to Scotland and initially supported Covenanters. Eventually became disillusioned and joined royalists c.1640. Made lieutenant-general in Scotland (1644), won a few victories but suffered a umber of failures resulting in ordered to disband his army (1646). Montrose sailed into exile where he continued to seek help for the imprisoned Charles I. Continued royalist support for Charles II who renewed Montrose's commission as lieutenant-general and captain-general of Scotland. Executed by covenanters (1650)
