Educated at Edinburgh.  Army surgeon (1745-1748).  Established a medical practice in Walbrook (1753).  Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of London (1758).  Had limited success as a physician, and relied instead upon his poetical writing for income.  Left England (1759) for a four-year tour of West Indies, and settled as a physician on St Kitts.  Known particularly for his principal poem 'The Sugar Cane' (1764), written on St Kitts.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>
