Elected MP for Inverness-shire (1708-10) and for Elginshire (1710-19). Plagued by financial instability. Became closely associated with the Duke of Argyll after 1714, but shared in the Duke's misfortunes in 1717 - Grant was dismissed from his offices. Regiment stationed in England during Jacobite rising of 1715. Appointed constable of Edinburgh Castle (1715). Died in Scotland from illness in 1719.
