Became chief of Clan Grant (1719). Called to the bar (1728). Ambition was a seat on the Scottish bench, and was repeatedly unsuccessful in the late 1730s. Left the bar in 1737, retired to estates and focused on financial debts. Entered politics, elected as MP for Elginshire (1741-61). Consistently voted with the Administration. Retired in 1761.
