Volunteered for naval service and rose through the ranks. Journeyed to the West Indies (1690), obtained a lieutenancy. Used career in parliament to gain credit with the Court and improve his prospects. Elected MP for home county of Lanarkshire (1708-10, 1718-34). Stood down from seat to take up appointment as Governor of Jamaica (1710-16) with support of Marlborough; outsides in a coup and sent back to Britain a prisoner, though he was duly acquitted. Stood for Lanarkshire seat in by-election which he won. Classed as a Hanoverian Whig.
Hamilton also sat as MP for Queensborough (1735-41) and Dartmouth (1742-47).
Appointed a lord of the Admirality (1729-37), though removed for failing to support the government over the allowance for the Prince of Wales. In compensation, given a place in Frederick's household.
Died 1754.
