Moved to London to assist his brother, anatomist William Hunter (1748). Enrolled as a surgical pupil at St George's hospital (1754). Studied briefly at Oxford (1755). Joined army as a staff surgeon (1760), and served in Europe (1761-1763). Returned to London and opened a surgical practice (1763), which grew steadily over the years, eventually requiring relocation to large premises in Leicester Square (1783). Elected to the Royal Society (1767). Appointed surgeon-extraordinary to George III (1776). Appointed surgeon-general of the army and inspector of army hospitals (1790). Published several surgical treatises, including his posthumous 'Treatise on the Blood, Inflammation, and Gunshot Wounds' (1794).
