Duke of Rothes. Commanded a regiment and accompanied Scots army into England - taken prisoner at battle of Worcester and imprisoned in Tower of London. Whilst able to visit Scotland, was not officially released until 1655. Visited Charles II and Breda and accompanied him on his return to England (1661). Held three of the highest offices in England - Extraordinary Lord of Session, Lord High Commissioner, Lord High Treasurer. Administration was highly unpopular and was dismissed from power in 1667, yet retained personal friendship with Charles II. Continued to be a prominent public figure. Died at Holyrood and buried at St Giles, Edinburgh (1681).
