+Arrived in London in 1723 as tutor to the children of the Duke of Montrose, whom he served until 1731. Under-secretary to the Prince of Wales (1742-1748).  Wrote works favourable to the government, especially in the 1750s and 1760s, and was rewarded with position of inspector of the exchequer book in the outports of London (1763).  Best known for his ballad 'William and Margaret' (1723) and for his 'Life of Francis Bacon' (1740).
