Pupil of Allan Ramsay with whom he went to Italy with. Upon his return, Martin became a student at he academy in St Martin's Lane, London. Worked on a number of commissions and established his own studio by 1770.&lt;br /&gt;
Contributed works to exhibitions of the Incorporated Society of Artists (1765-1777) and elected to the positions of treasurer, vice-president, and president between 1772 and 1777. Also exhibited portraits at the Free Society of Artists (1767) and at the Royal Academy (1779, 1790).&lt;br /&gt;
Moved to Edinburgh in 1780 where he died in 1797.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>
