Educated at James Mundell's private school in the West Bow, Edinburgh. Son of Alexander Monro primus - attended father’s anatomy class as Edinburgh University from 1746. Graduated MD 1753.&lt;br /&gt;
Moved to London after graduation, set up practice in Jermyn Street. Became licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians (1756), elected physician to St George's Hospital (1758) and in 1760 was appointed physician to British Military Hospital in Germany – led to the publication of 'An Account of the Diseases which were most Frequent in the British Hospitals in Germany' (1764)&lt;br /&gt;
Returned to St George’s Hospital and became a fellow of Royal Society (1766) and fellow of Royal Society of Edinburgh (1783). Monro was elected a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians by special grace. Monro was recalled to military service in 1778. &lt;br /&gt;
Retired to his house in Argyle Street 1786 yet was still the senior physician to forces at time of death.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>
