Named to the Ayrshire commission for the apprehension of Roman Catholics (1642). Appointed colonel of horse for the shires of Ayr, Renfrew, and Lanark in the army being raised to assist the English parliamentarians against the king. Entered England (1644). Present at the Siege of York and at the battle of Marsten Moor. <br /> Supported the proposal for the recall of Charles II. Arrested in 1651 whilst raising for troops for the king. Initially taken to Edinburgh Castle, then Hull and finally to Berwick. Released in 1659 and returned to Scotland where he died in 1661.</div>
