Graduated from University of Glasgow in 1742 and was apprenticed to surgeons William Stirling and John Gordon in 1744. Attended medical lectures but also devoted time to literature & philosophy. Moore served as a surgeon’s mate in the north British fusiliers; Returned to England and attended lectures of William Hunter before travelling around Europe. He then returned to Scotland via London to again attend lectures of Hunter and a course in midwifery taught by William Smellie.
By late 1777 Moore moved family to London taking a house in Clarges Street but retired from medical practice, devoting his time to writing novels and medical tracts. He died at Marshgate House, Richmond, Surrey and is buried at buried at Paradise cemetery, St Mary Magdalene's, Richmond.
