Jacobite first earl of Dunbar. Admitted as an advocate at the Scots Bar (1710) but chose to pursue political, rather than legal, career. Elected MP for Westminster (1710). Member of Parliament for Elgin Burghs (1713). Re-elected 1713 but declared invalid on petition of rival candidate. Chose to go to exiled Jacobite court in France. Travelled secretly to England and Scotland between 1715-16, eventually caught and imprisoned in Newgate from April to July 1716. Released and chose to remain in England until he was again summoned to exiled court, this time in Urbino. Raised to peerage in 1724. Continued to serve various roles at exiled court. Died at Avignon (1770).
