Apprenticed as a carpenter (1747).  Travelled in Europe (1754) before settling in London (1759).  Designed and oversaw construction of Blackfriars Bridge (1760-1769), which led to numerous further architectural commissions throughout the British Isles, although he began to concentrate on designing canals from 1780s.  Elected Fellow of the Royal Society (1767).  Founder member of the Architects' Club (1791).&lt;/div&gt;</summary>
