Formerly William Murray, 4th son of John Murray, 1st Marquess of Atholl.

Educated in England, possibly at Eton College. Entered English navy (1683), though quit his posts in 1688 and returned to Scotland. Inherited the title of Lord Nairne and sat in Parliament in 1690 - tried to restore James II through Parliament; failed and did not attend during William's or Anne's reign.
Acted as intermediary during preparations of a French invasion (1707) between his brother and Anne, dowager duchess of Hamilton. Warrant issued for Nairne's arrest in 1708; taken prisoner to London. Participated in 1715 Jacobite rising. Surrendered at Preston and again taken prisoner to London. Convicted and sentenced to be executed, though he was eventually pardoned in 1717. Returned to Scotland and resumed his Jacobite activities. Died 1726.
