Orphaned as a toddler, taken under royal protection. Followed King James to England and was educated, by royal expense, at Oxford (1604-6). He then received a royal pension. Made a knight of the Bath (1610) and began naturalization proceedings in 1614. Appointed keeper of the walks in Cranborne Chase, Berkshire (1616).
in 1618, Stewart escorted the Spanish ambassador home to Madrid; began a career in the navy which would eventually bring him into conflict with Lord Admiral Buckingham. Led to potential imprisonment and distancing from the court. Upon Buckingham's death, seems to have resumed role at court. Died c.1634/5.
