3rd earl of Bute (). Scottish representative peer, 1737-1741. Initially lived in Scotland, but moved to London soon after outbreak of Jacobite Rebellion (1745). Became a favourite of Frederick Henry, Prince of Wales, and made gentleman of the bedchamber (1750). Tutor to future George III, with whom he developed a very close relationship. Groom of the stole to Prince George (1756). Advanced rapidly upon accession of George III, culminating in appointment as First Lord of the Treasury (1762). Widely unpopular, and soon forced to resign (1763). Retired from public life, settling at Christchurch, Hampshire.
