Attended St Andrews University, graduating MA (1606), and subsequently elected fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge (1606). Ordained a priest (1610), and received BD (1611) and DD (1613). Also a royal chaplain. Served James VI and I in a variety of clerical/diplomatic roles.
