‘Memorandum that on Saturday the xxxth of November 1639 it was ordered as followeth nixt whereas Mr. Hugh Rosse a scottish gent this day came and demanded xlv£ vld wch. he affermeth is owing unto him by the corporacion for moneys disbursed & laid out by him about the releasement of nine Hull marriners taken prisoners in Dunkirk in anno 1626 wch. some the maior & aldermen here prsent do not conceive the body of the corporacion lyable to pay yet in regard the worke was very charitable & the plies thereby released are soe poor that they are no ways able to make any indifferent satisfaction to the Gentleman for his paines therein taken & monies disbursed It is therefore now ordered that Mr. Alderman Raches shallbe entreakd to agree [f. 124] wth Mr. Rosse for as easy payment as he can and whatsoever he shall agree for shallbe paiit for by the Towne soe that it exceed not fifty pounds’.
