Son of John and Margaret Purves. Broadwood learned cabinet-making from his father and was able to obtain an apprenticeship with Burkhardt Tschudi (anglicized to Burkat Shudi) in 1761 with a letter of introduction from the local laird. Was taken into partnership with Shudi in 1770 at 33 Great Putney Street. After Shudi's retirement Broadwood continued the business eventually leasing numbers 14 and 15 Kensington Gore, London.
