Attended Foveran boarding school and Marischal College, Aberdeen, graduating MA in 1737. Moved to London and worked for Robert Dodsley as a translator of French novels. Duncan published ‘The Elements of Logic’ (1748) which led to his appointment, and therefore return to Scotland, in May 1752 as one of three professors of philosophy at Marischal College.
