Studied medicine at Edinburgh before emigrating to West Indies where he was appointed as a second surgeon at the military hospital in Jamaica. Returned to Britain in 1745. Obtained an ensigncy with 42nd highlanders (1746). Returned to medicine when brigade was broken up in 1748, establishing practice in village of Skelton, Yorkshire. Graduated MD St Andrews University (1765). Published both medical & non-medical works. Retired Knayton, near Thirsk in Yorkshire, where he died and is buried at Leake church
