1st earl of Carlisle. Made gentleman of privy chamber and soon elevated to the bedchamber. Sent as an ambassador to France (1603), spending much of the 1620s as an extraordinary ambassador in France. Knighted before being naturalized as an English citizen (1604). Made English baron as Baron Hay of Sawley, Yorkshire (1615); Viscount of Doncaster (1618). Returned to London 1629.
