Surname formerly Gordon. Sixteenth Earl of Sutherland. Supported union between England and Scotland. Was representative peer in Parliament 1707-8 and again fro 1715 until death in 1733. Was in Scotland for Jacobite rising of 1715. Created a Knight of the Order of the Thistle (1716). Died in Chelsea, 1733 and buried at Darnoch in Sutherland.
