First Earl of Dunmore. Most anglicized son of John Murray, 1st marquis of Atholl. Appointed lieutenant-colonel of Scots Greys dragoons (1681). MP for Wigan (1685). Suspected of fomenting Highland revolt and imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle (1689-90). Upon release retreated to England until 1700. Settled in Chester c.1696. Died at Holyrood Palace 1710.
