Educated at University of Edinburgh and on Continent, leaving Scotland in 1730. Returned home in 1735 and made private secretary to Lord Tweeddale. Accepted seat as MP for Aberdeenshire in 1747 when his relation, Sir Arthur Forbes, stood down. Forced to give up his seat in 1754 due to hostility from the Duke of Argyll. Able to stand for Parliament as MP for Elgin Burghs (1755-71). Appointed envoy to Berlin where he died in 1771.
