Item 34, Examination of Anne Nicholson, 27 February 1747

Apprenticed to Benjamin Nicholson, burgess and brewer of Berwick-upon-Tweed.  Son of James Stewart, gentleman of Langton Mill (deceased). Accused in 1747 of fathering an illegitimate child with Anne Nicholson of Berwick-upon-Tweed.
‘This Examinant saith that on or about the latter End of March last past George Stewart [apprentice from Langton Mill - see BAA/B6/4, p.11] Apprentice to Mr Benjamin Nicholson of Berwick aforesaid Brewer in the House of the s[ai]d Benjamin Nicholson, had the Carnal Knowledge of her Body, whereby this Examinant was got with a Male Bastard Child of which she was delivered on the Twenty fifth day of December last And this Examinant further saith that he the said George Stewart and no other person whatsoever is the only true and lawfull father of her said Child of which she was delivered as aforesaid.
