First Lord Napier of Merchiston. Graduated from University of Glasgow (1593). Appointed gentleman of king’s privy chamber and moved with King James to England in 1603. Remained as a courtier for nearly a decade and returned to Scotland when he saw no future at court. Knighted (1616). Admitted to privy council of Scotland (1617) and began long administrative career in Scotland. Despite absence from court continued to enjoy royal favour under Charles I. Created Lord in 1627. Seems to have been at court again in 1628 to resolve a dispute but returned to Scotland c.1630 and continued life as a politician. Died at Fincastle (1645)
