Chaplaoin to Earl of Traquair (1630s), and presented to Coldingham, although without settling. Took order in England, becoming rector of Burmarsh, Kent (1641). Deposed (1650). Travelled abroad. Presented as rector of Ivychurch, Kent (1660), but licenced non-resident (1661). Bishop of Aberdeen (1663). Archbishop of Glasgow (1664). Retired (1670), but restored to Glasgow (1674). Archbishop of St Andrews (1679). Known for his hard-line stance against Presbyterian non-conformists.
