Apprenticed to William Riddell, burgess and merchant of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Son of John Paxton, farmer of Kelso (deceased). Two brothers, James (1769) and Thomas (1777) Paxton, also served as apprentices in Berwick-upon-Tweed.
