Practiced medicine in Edinburgh, where he engaged in a vicious pamphlet debate regarding fevers. Became associated with the Dukes of Argyll, and, as their client, moved to London to practice, 1708. MP for the Ayr Burghs (1710-1719), during which time he maintained his links with the Argylls and became a consistent supporter of the government. Appointed first physician to Prince George (1714).
