Moved to London as a child after his Jacobite father was forced to leave Scotland (1691). Educated at Oxford (1699-1709), after which he established a medical practice at Greenwich. Admitted Candidate (1728) and Fellow (1729) of the Royal College of Physicians of London. Physician to Bethlam ('Bedlam') asylum (1728-1752), in which position he gained a reputation as an expert on the treatment of insanity.
