Apprenticed as an apothecary in Lanark (1714), where he established his own business (1722). Began practicing midwifery in Lanark, which eventually became his major interest (c.1737). Admitted to the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (1733). Moved to London (1739) and established independent midwifery practice, where he also taught extensively. Awarded MD from Glasgow (1745). Published 'A Treatise of the Theory and Practice of Midwifery' (1752), which made him arguably the best-known midwife in Britain.
