Took MA at the University of Edinburgh at age 14. Began his career in Scotland, first as minister of Saltoun, East Lothian (1665-1669) and then as Professor of Divinity at the University of Glasgow (1669-1674). In London (1674-1685), but fled to Dutch Republic to escape charges of treason for anti-Catholic agitation. Returned to England with William and Mary (1688), and became Bishop of Salisbury, 1689.
