Graduated University of Glasgow (1623) and entered the army. He was an active covenanter who became a client of Montrose. Joined King Charles at York (1642) and sent to Europe to seek aid. On his return, Cochrane was arrested and imprisoned at Hull and Windsor Castle. Released and joined siege of Towcester. Knighted in 1640s. Prohibited by Scottish Parliament from returning to Scotland (1650). Settled in England, although date of death is unknown.
