Educated at the University of Glasgow then served as a mercenary on the Continent. Returned to Scotland and joined army of the solemn league and covenant, fighting at the battle of Marston Moor (1644). Opposed the December 1647 engagement. Became a major-general in the kirk party aligned whiggamore forces. Set out for London in 1648 carrying a letter to Cromwell. Marched with Charles II into England (1651) and taken prisoner during, or just after, the battle of Worcester. Sent to the Tower of London. Escaped in 1654 but recaptured. Imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle where he again escaped in 1657, fleeing to the Continent. Made a a lord of the bedchamber after Restoration. Died 1684
